School District | 광역밴쿠버의 학군

Under the jurisdiction of the British Columbia Ministry of Education, there are 59 school districts in the province. In the Greater Vancouver area, commonly referred to as Metro Vancouver, there are 13 municipalities and 10 regional districts, with a total of 11 school districts. It is important to consider school districts when choosing to study abroad, as each region may have differences in educational conditions and environments.

BC 주정부의 교육부 산하에는 59개의 교육청(School District, 학군)을 두고 있으며, 흔히 메트로 밴쿠버라고 불리는 광역 밴쿠버(The Greater Vancouver)에는 13개의 시와 10개의 자치지역이 있으며, 이 지역에 총 11개의 교육청이 있습니다. 각 지역별로 교육여건이나 환경의 차이가 있어 자녀유학을 선택 시 중요하게 고려해야 하는 부분 중 하나가 바로 학군입니다.

Vancouver (SD39) | 밴쿠버 (SD39)

89 Elementary (K–G7), 18 Secondary (G8–G12)

As the core city of Greater Vancouver, Downtown is home to prestigious public and private schools, along with the University of British Columbia (UBC) located in the West region. The East area, including Greater Vancouver, also boasts a significant number of public and private schools. The educational system follows a linear structure with 8 subjects per year, starting in September. There are ELL programs for international students and various extracurricular activities within schools. Notable local universities include UBC, Langara, and VCC.

광역밴쿠버의 핵심도시 Downtown, UBC대학과 높은 수준의 공립 및 사립학교들이 West지구에 있으며, East 지역을 포함해 광역밴쿠버에서 두 번째로 많은 공립·사립학교가 있습니다. Linear system(연간 8과목) 교육구로 9월 신학기, 국제학생을 위한 ELL 제도 및 다양한 교내 서클활동을 운영합니다. 지역 유명대학으로 UBC, Langara, VCC 대학이 있습니다.

Burnaby (SD41) | 버나비 (SD41)

41 Elementary (K–G7), 8 Secondary (G8–G12)

Located centrally within Greater Vancouver, Burnaby is bordered by Vancouver to the west, Coquitlam to the east, and New Westminster to the south. Divided into North and South, it is a growing city known as a hub for economy, education, and culture. Both linear and semester systems are in operation within the school district. Semester schools such as Alpha, Burnaby Central, Burnaby Mountain, and Byrne Creek Secondary offer 4 subjects per semester, while linear schools like Burnaby North, Burnaby South, Cariboo Hill, and Moscrop Secondary provide 8 subjects per year. All schools offer AP programs.

지역적으로 광역밴쿠버 중앙에 위치한 도시로 서쪽으로 밴쿠버, 동쪽으로 코퀴틀람, 남쪽으로 뉴웨스트민스터를 접합니다. 크게 North와 South로 구분되며, 경제·교육·문화의 중심지로 성장하는 도시입니다. Linear 및 Semester 시스템이 모두 운영되며, Semester school(Alpha, Burnaby Central, Burnaby Mountain, Byrne Creek Secondary)은 학기당 4과목, Linear school(Burnaby North, Burnaby South, Cariboo Hill, Moscrop Secondary)은 연간 8과목입니다. 모든 학교가 AP 프로그램을 운영합니다.

New Westminster (SD40) | 뉴웨스트민스터 (SD40)

8 Elementary (K–5), 3 Middle School (G6–G8), 1 Secondary (G9–G12)

Named after the Westminster area in London, it is a small but elegant city with a British feel, having initially been the capital of British Columbia. It is currently the smallest school district. Operating on a linear school system, it provides ELL support for international students and offers various extracurricular activities. The region is home to Douglas College, a renowned local college.

영국 런던의 웨스트민스터 지역과 닮았다고 하여 붙여진 지명으로, 작은 규모이지만 영국풍의 품격이 느껴지는 곳이며 BC주 최초의 주도이기도 했습니다. 현재는 가장 작은 교육구로, Linear school system 학제이며 국제학생을 위한 ELL 지원과 다양한 교내 서클활동이 구성되어 있습니다. 지역 유명대학으로 Douglas College가 있습니다.

North Vancouver (SD44) | 노스밴쿠버 (SD44)

25 Elementary (K–G7), 7 Secondary (G8–G12)

Located on the steep slopes of the North Shore mountains, North Vancouver is known for its high quality of life and education, as well as its beautiful natural surroundings. Among the 7 secondary schools, 6 operate on a linear system, while Sutherland Secondary follows a semester system. The IB program is offered at Capilano, Queen Mary, and Norgate Elementary Schools, as well as at Carson Graham Secondary School. The prestigious Capilano University is also situated in the area.

밴쿠버 북부 산의 경사면에 형성된 도시로, 거주민의 생활 및 교육수준이 높고 좋은 자연환경을 갖춘 곳입니다. 7개 Secondary school 중 6곳은 Linear이며, Sutherland Secondary만 Semester 학제입니다. IB 프로그램 초등학교는 Capilano, Queen Mary, Norgate이며, IB Secondary school은 Carson Graham입니다. 지역 명문 Capilano University가 있습니다.

West Vancouver (SD45) | 웨스트밴쿠버 (SD45)

14 Elementary (K–G7), 3 Secondary (G8–G12)

Situated west across the Lions Gate Bridge, West Vancouver is known for its stunning coastal landscapes and high standard of living, along with its excellent school district. West Vancouver Secondary School offers the IB program, while Rockridge Secondary and Sentinel Secondary offer AP programs.

라이언스 게이트 브리지를 건너 West 방향에 위치한 도시로 해안선을 따라 자연경관이 수려하며 높은 생활수준과 학군이 형성된 도시입니다. IB를 제공하는 공립 Secondary school은 West Vancouver Secondary이며, AP는 Rockridge Secondary와 Sentinel Secondary에서 제공됩니다.

Richmond (SD38) | 리치몬드 (SD38)

38 Elementary (K–G7), 10 Secondary (G8–G12)

Located in the vast plains south of Vancouver, Richmond is home to YVR Vancouver International Airport and the popular destination of Steveston. The city has a relatively high proportion of Chinese residents. Richmond Secondary School offers the IB program, and several other schools in the district provide AP programs.

밴쿠버 남쪽의 거대한 평야지역으로 YVR 밴쿠버 국제공항과 Steveston 명소가 있고, 중국인 비율이 다소 높은 도시입니다. IB를 제공하는 공립학교는 Richmond Secondary School이며, 다수 학교에서 AP 프로그램을 제공합니다.

Coquitlam (SD43) | 코퀴틀람 (SD43)

46 Elementary (K–5), 14 Middle School (G6–G8), 11 Secondary (G9–G12)

Coquitlam is part of the Tri-City area, consisting of the cities of Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, and Port Moody, unified under one school district. It offers a pleasant living environment with well-developed Korean commercial districts. The education system operates on a semester basis. Port Moody Secondary offers the IB program, while AP programs are available at several schools including Pinetree, Centennial, and Terry Fox.

코퀴틀람은 Tri-city로 3개의 도시(City of Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody)가 하나의 교육구로 되어 있으며, 쾌적한 주거환경과 한인상권 인프라가 고루 발달된 지역입니다. 교육제는 Semester 학제이며, IB를 제공하는 공립학교는 Port Moody Secondary, AP는 Pinetree, Centennial, Terry Fox 등 여러 학교에서 제공합니다.

Surrey | Langley | Delta | Maple Ridge | 써리·랭리·델타·메이플리지

These districts, located in the outskirts of Vancouver due to urban expansion, are becoming increasingly popular for education. Surrey School District is the largest in Greater Vancouver, comprising 103 Elementary and 21 Secondary schools. Langley School District is divided into 3 categories, with 45 Elementary, 4 Middle, and 10 Secondary schools; Langley Fine Arts, known for its arts program, offers education from elementary to high school, while Langley Fundamental provides integrated programs for middle and high school. Delta School District covers an area from the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal to Vancouver Island, consisting of 24 Elementary and 7 Secondary schools. Maple Ridge, nestled beneath beautiful mountains, is home to 22 Elementary schools and 6 Secondary schools, including Thomas Haney Secondary, renowned for its autonomous high school program.

도시팽창으로 밴쿠버 중심에서 다소 떨어진 외곽지역으로 점점 인기가 높은 교육구입니다. Surrey SD는 광역밴쿠버에서 가장 큰 교육구로 103개 Elementary와 21개 Secondary로 구성됩니다. Langley SD는 3분류지구로 45개 Elementary, 4개 Middle, 10개 Secondary로 구성되며, 예술고로 유명한 Langley Fine Arts는 초·중·고 일체형이고 Langley Fundamental은 중·고 일체형입니다. Delta SD는 밴쿠버 아일랜드로 가는 트와센 페리 터미널이 있는 지역으로 24개 Elementary와 7개 Secondary로 구성되어 있으며, Maple Ridge에는 아름다운 산 아래 22개 Elementary와 자율형 고등학교로 유명한 Thomas Haney를 포함한 6개 Secondary가 있습니다.
