University Admissions Process | 대학 입시 과정

In Canada, university admissions generally start with applications in December, closing in January, with admissions decisions made between April and June. Depending on (1) the desired university and program, (2) whether the student is currently attending or has graduated from high school, and (3) the country of graduation or expected graduation, there may be differences in admission strategies and preparation requirements, necessitating the expertise of experienced professionals.

In the United States, university admissions are divided into Early and Regular decision rounds, with schools either adopting one method or accepting both. The application timelines vary, with transcripts, recommendations, and essays being of utmost importance.

• Early Decision: November application → February–March results
• Regular Decision: January application → April–June results

캐나다 대학입학은 일반적으로 12월 원서접수를 시작하며 1월 중 마감, 4–6월 사이에 입학결과가 나옵니다. (1) 희망대학·학과, (2) 고등학교를 재학중이거나 졸업한 학생인지, (3) 졸업한(또는 졸업예정인) 국가에 따라 입시공략 및 준비내용에 차이가 있기에 경험 많은 전문가가 필요합니다.

미국 대학입학 지원은 Early와 Regular로 나뉘며, 학교에 따라 한 가지 방법 또는 두 가지 방식을 모두 채택합니다. 지원시기에 차이가 있으며, 내신·추천서·에세이가 매우 중요합니다.

• Early: 11월 지원 → 2–3월 결과
• Regular: 1월 지원 → 4–6월 결과

Standardized Tests: SAT · ACT · IB · AP | 표준화 시험: SAT·ACT·IB·AP

When applying to universities in the United States or Canada, SAT, ACT, IB, and AP scores can make an application stand out. Canadian universities weigh academic transcripts most heavily, while U.S. universities place significant weight on transcripts, recommendations, and essays.

캐나다 대학은 내신 위주이며, 미국대학은 내신, 추천서 및 에세이가 매우 중요합니다.

SAT

SAT allows a maximum of 7 sittings annually (excluding February, April, July, August, and September). It comprises the SAT Reasoning Test, consisting of Evidence-Based Reading & Writing and Math sections. Each section is scored out of 800 points, totaling 1600 points. A competitive application typically requires a score of 1500 or above.

연간 최대 7회 응시 가능(2, 4, 7, 8, 9월 제외). SAT Reasoning Test(Evidence-Based Reading & Writing, Math)로 구성되며 각 800점, 총 1600점 만점에 안정적 지원은 1500점 이상입니다.

ACT

Consists of 4 sections (Reading, Science, English, Math) and an optional Essay, with a maximum score of 36 for each subject. Unlike Reading and Science, where difficulty affects scoring, in English and Math it's possible to achieve a perfect score even with one incorrect answer.

4개 섹션(Reading, Science, English, Math)과 선택 항목(에세이)으로 구성되며, 과목별 36점 만점입니다. Reading과 Science와 달리 English와 Math는 난이도에 따라 한 문제를 틀려도 만점이 가능합니다.

IB

Consists of 6 main subjects: languages, social sciences, experimental sciences, math, and visual or performing arts. A maximum score of 45 is possible, with each of the 6 subjects scored out of 7 points, plus 3 points for the Core (EE, TOK). Subjects are divided into HL (Higher Level) and SL (Standard Level), with a requirement of at least 3 HL subjects.

주요 6과목(languages, social, experimental sciences, math, visual or performing arts)으로 구성되며, 45점 만점(6과목 × 7점 만점 + Core 1과목 3점(EE, TOK))입니다. HL과 SL로 나뉘며 3과목 이상 HL이 필요합니다.

AP

Consists of 7 sections — English, Math & Computer Sciences, History & Social Science, Science, Language, Art, and computer-related subjects — totaling 39 subjects. Each subject is scored out of 5 points. Depending on the desired school and program, students can choose subjects selectively; it is recommended to choose 5–7 subjects across one or two per section.

7섹션(English, Math & Computer Sciences, History & Social Science, Science, Language, Art, Computer 계열)으로 총 39개 과목이 있으며 과목당 5점 만점입니다. 희망 학교·학과에 따라 원하는 과목을 선택적으로 구성하며, 섹션별로 한두 과목씩 총 5–7과목 정도를 추천합니다.

Regular Admission | 정규입학

Admission to Canadian universities for the fall semester (September) typically begins with applications opening in December and closing in January, with admissions decisions usually released between April and June. Because preparation and application methods vary by (1) desired university and program, (2) whether the student is currently enrolled or has graduated from high school, and (3) country of graduation or expected graduation, strategic planning should begin as early as grades 9–10.

University Transfer | 편입학

University transfer refers to the process of transferring from a 2-year college to a university, either upon completion of an associate degree or while still enrolled, by transferring credits to the desired university. In North America, university transfer is based on credit transfer rather than specific academic years, making management of GPA and analysis of eligible universities and programs crucial.

• SFU-affiliated institution FIC → SFU

2년제 대학 졸업 후 혹은 재학중에 Credit Transfer를 통해 최종 목적지의 대학으로 편입하는 과정입니다. 북미 대학편입은 학년이 아닌 크레딧 인정제이기에 희망대학 지원에 필요한 학점 관리(GPA), 지원 가능한 대학·학과 분석이 매우 중요합니다.

예시:

• 사립 Alexander College → UBC, SFU
• 공립 Langara College, Douglas College → UBC
• SFU 부설대학 FIC → SFU 등

Pathway College Admission | 패스웨이 칼리지 입학

Pathway college admission refers to gaining university admission without submitting official English test scores such as IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo, after completing an accredited pathway program at a language institution designated as a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) that has an established agreement with the university. This is available at over 20 language institutions in cities like Vancouver and Toronto. Selecting a language institution with a proven track record of successful admissions is crucial.

Examples:

• ILAC, ILSC (pathway) → Langara, Douglas, Alexander
• VGC (pathway) → BCIT

DLI 인준된 어학기관과 대학 간 협의·검증된 Accredited Pathway 프로그램을 이수·통과한 경우 IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo 등 공식 영어시험 점수 제출 없이 해당 대학에 입학하는 과정입니다. 밴쿠버 및 토론토 등 20여개 어학기관에서 프로그램을 제공하며, 높은 입학성공 사례를 갖춘 어학기관 선택이 중요합니다.
